Featured Attraction: Blakemore Planetarium
After a year and a half of renovations, the Blakemore Planetarium at the Museum of the Southwest reopened in October of 2009 to nearly 800 visitors to a grand reopening party. There have been a great many changes during the renovation and the planetarium is an incredible asset for the community of Midland and the Permian Basin as a whole.
First and foremost is the new Spitz Scidome HD projector. One of only five in the world as of right now, this first Spitz HD system west of the Mississippi River provides the capability for projecting the night sky as well as full-dome video. Our first program was Oasis in Space, a wonderful show about the search for water in our solar system. This Spring, our feature presentation is Astronaut, narrated by Ewan McGregor. Once a month, the West Texas Astronomers bring out their telescopes to the park behind the planetarium and have a star party.
Our new exhibit area was designed with the Texas state education standards in mind. Take time to browse the hands-on exhibit to learn about everything from stars and planets to density and the nature of light. In addition to our permanent exhibit, we are displaying replicas of moon rocks. Provided by Tommy Lewis of Simulated Rock Techniques, these replicas are the only NASA approved replicas in the world, and the Blakemore Planetarium is lucky enough to be able to display this one-of-a-kind exhibit.
Our new classroom facility is both functional and adaptive. While it can be used as a true technology-filled classroom, it can also be adjusted for many other uses including parties, business meetings, and other get-togethers.
Check out www.museumsw.org for our current feature and any upcoming special events, as well as information on renting the planetarium for your special event.

Old Rankin Highway Visitor Center
This past quarter was a busy one at the Visitor Center with visitors from 48 states and 13 countries. Travelers came from Canada, England, Germany, Belgium Scotland, Russia, India, Norway, Denmark, Trinidad, Sweden, France, and Mexico. We have had 924 visitors for the winter quarter. The winter travelers are going home since it will not be long until they begin to have warmer weather where they live.
T he employees and volunteers get to hear stories about the states and countries the visitors come from. We get to travel all over the world and never leave our community. We also get to share our community with them so they can pass the word about our great community to others when they get home and that brings more people here to visit. Some of the visitors come to Midland just to see some of our museums.
We have a great group of 15 volunteers that come each week to give of their time to share with the visitors about our community and surrounding areas in Texas. For the winter quarter, the volunteers gave 477.5 hours of their lives so they could share our city with the visitors. These volunteers come from many lifestyles. Some of them are retired from the work force but give hours to volunteer here. Some of them volunteer other places in our city also. Some of the volunteers are still working but find time to give so they can share our community with travelers.
The volunteers also have many great stories to tell about of their adventures and travels around the world. Some also have stories about their life in Midland as some have lived here many years or all of their life.
Most of the volunteers we have here at the visitors' center have been here since just before we opened 26 months ago. When you add up the time, 113 weeks times four to eight hours per week then that makes up quite a few hours of a persons' life given to volunteering just here. I want to honor these volunteers. - Daisy Bowers, Visitor Center Manager
