Permian Basin Petroleum Museum
Opened in 1975, The Petroleum Museum tells the story of petroleum and energy and its impact on our lives. With its interactive exhibits, exquisite oil paintings and the legendary Chaparral cars, the Museum offers something for everyone. The Museum's story of petroleum begins by tracing the geology of the Permian Basin back 250 million years with video presentations and an underwater exploration of the Permian Sea. A stroll through a Boomtown takes visitors back 100 years when oil was discovered in the Permian Basin. The advancing technology of the industry is explained to guests from nitro glycerin shoots to fracturing for enhanced recovery. The story of pipelines laid throughout the area is told through the beautiful paintings of John C. Scott. Experience the cultural history of the Permian Basin through the incredible paintings of award winning artist Tom Lovell. Lovell traces our cultural history from the early Native Americans to the ranchers and oil men who settled the Permian Basin. The Chaparral cars take visitors back to the 60's when Jim Hall captivated the racing world with his innovative race cars. Applied engineering and technology are the buzzwords in this gallery as guests experience the thrill of Can-Am racing with hands-on exhibits and video presentations. The Museum is open Monday - Saturday 10:00 - 5:00 and Sundays 2:00 - 5:00. Strollers and wheelchairs are available. Admission is charged.

Old Rankin Highway Visitor Center
The mission of the Old Rankin Highway Visitors Center is to draw visitors off of Interstate 20 and encourage them to stay, spend money and play in Midland. Through displays, educational areas and promotional information they are encouraged to stay in Midland hotels, visit Midland attractions, shop in our great variety of shops and to sample the variety of cuisine available. Millions of vehicles pass through Midland via Interstate 20 every year. The Old Rankin Highway Visitors Center is the first impression travelers have of our wonderful community.
The visitors center is seeking a few very special volunteers to join our group of wonderful volunteers we have now to help us make a great first impression. Volunteers have the opportunity to meet travelers from around the state, country and world. While visitors are learning about Midland and our region, volunteers have the opportunity to learn about the visitors' home towns as well. Midland has a lot to offer in the way of food, fun and hospitality. Join us at ORHVC as we invite travelers to visit our community's attractions, events and businesses! For more information about volunteering, please contact Daisy Bowers at the Visitors Center, (432) 687-8286
